Abstract

The thermal conduction of a soil wall is influenced primarily by the kinds of soils, the presence of reinforced materials, density of soil wall, relative humidity, temperature, and thickness of soil wall. This study was performed to investigate the significance of each of these parameters for thermal conduction of soil wall. Thermal conductivity(k) and overall heat transfer coefficient(U) of soil wall was measured considering these factors. After analyzing results of k and U, sandy soil can be used as better insulation to keep warm because the values of k and U of soil wall using sandy soil were lower than those of soil wall using clayey soil. Reinforcement can be used to obtain a better insulation effect because k or U with temperature of reinforced soil wall was lower than those of unreinforced soil wall. And, as density of soil wall was increased, the values of k and U were higher. As thickness of soil wall was decreased, the value of U was higher. As relative humidity and/or temperature was increased, the values of k and U of soil wall were increased. Thermal conductivity of soil wall was lower than that of cement brick wall and was higher than that of polystyrene wall. And overall heat transfer coefficient of soil wall was medium value comparing those of cement block wall and polystyrene wall. Therefore, soil wall can be used as a good insulation.
