Abstract
This paper critically explores the social construction of urban heritage— heritagization—to highlight the limitations and possibilities of urban regeneration through historic preservation. First, it addresses the differences among paradigms regarding heritage, thereby explaining how the incomplete transition between such paradigms sustains the dualistic approaches to heritage—namely, preservation and development. Then, it further illuminates new forms of contemporary heritage and their characteristics of being constantly reconstructed and reinvented, drawing upon concepts such as ‘living heritage’ and ‘historical theme park’. Based on this theoretical framework, the paper analyzes the paradoxical symbiotic relationship between historic preservation and urban regeneration, using the cases of Donuimun Museum Village in Jongno-gu, Seoul. In particular, it focuses on which images and styles of the past were selected and how they were preserved and utilized in the heritagization process of old urban villages. By doing so, the paper demonstrates that a new form of heritage, endlessly evolving and expanding, is emerging as both a goal and a means of urban regeneration.
