Abstract
A new covered barley variety, eunalbori 1 was developed from the cross between Keunalbori, a large grain variety, and Milyang 55, a britle-awned variety, by the wheat and barley breding team in the National Yeongnam Agricultural Exper-iment Station (NYAES) in 2001. A promising line, YB 3724-3B-13-2-1, was selected in 1998, and designated as Milyang 105. Itgave prominently good results from regional adaptation yield trials(RAT) for three years from 1999 to 2001 and released as thename of eunalbori 1 Keunalbori 1 has lodging resistance and winter hardines. It is resistant to the barley yelow mosaicvirus and moderately resistant to the powdery mildew. The average heading date of Keunalbori 1 was 1 day earlier but the matur-ing date was 1 day later than those of Olbori in paddy of regional trials during 1999-2001, respectively. Its culm length is 8 cmshorter than that of Olbori in pady of regional trials and the spike with the length of 4.1 cm longer than that of Olbori. The1,000 grain weight of Keunalbori 1 was 3.4 g heavier than that of Olbori, but the number of spikes per m2 and test weight werelower than those of Olbori, respectively. The yield potential of Keunalbori 1 averaged 4.52 MT/ha in paddy of regional trials dur-ing 1999-2001, which was 9% higher than that of Olbori. The Keunalbori 1 was similar to Olbori in the grain quality componentssuch as ash content, b-glucan content, and pearled grain rate. Its crude protein content is low, whereas the whiteness of pearledgrains and the rates of water absorption and expansion were higher, which is good for edible-use. This variety is suitable for dou-ble croping system with rice in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula.
