A New High-yielding and Good-quality Rice Cultivar “Sobibyeo” Adaptable to Low Fertilizer Level

Abstract

Sobi byeo is a new japoni ca rice cul tivar devel oped from a cross betw een H w ayeongbyeo and Y R13604A cp22 lineby the rice breedi ng team of National H onam Agricul tural Experiment Station (NHAES), RDA, in 1999. This cul tivar has a largegrai n and about 119 days of grow th duration from transpl anting to harvesting under Korean cl imatic condi tion. Sobi byeo is aver -age 84 tal l in cul m lengt h and has hi gh milled rice yi el d in low N fertilization rate. Milled kernel s of Sobi byeo are transl ucentwith non- glutinous endosper m. It has about 17.5% of am ylose cont ent and good pal atabi lity of cooked rice. This cul tivar show sm oderate resi stant to leaf bl ast and resi stant to stripe vi rus. This cul tivar show s increasi ng yiel d as N fertilization rate is hi gher andmilled rice yi el d at N 60 and 10 kg/ ha level s is si milar to that of D ongj inbyeo at N 110 and 165 kg/ ha level s, respect ivel y. Theyiel d per form ance of Sobi byeo i s about 5. 83 M T/ha, 6. 04 M T/ 5. 20 M T/ha and 5. 18 M T/ha i n m i lled r ice under or di nary,heavy fertilizi ng (N 150~180 kg/ ha), doubl e croppi ng and late cul tivations, respect ivel y. It show s about 12% , 10% , 9% , and 8%higher yiel d under ordi nary, heavy fertilizi ng (N 150~180 kg/ ha), doubl e croppi ng and late cul tivations com pared with the checkvariety, D ongj inbyeo. The optimum nitr level for cul tivation of t his variety is t hought to be 60 to 70 kg/ ha. This cul tivar i sadapt abl e t o si ngl e croppi ng or doubl e croppi ng i n t he sout hern pl ai n ar ea of Korea.
