Abstract
In this dissertation, a problem about post trauma stress disorder by war and itshealing in 『The Surrendered』 of Lee Chang-rae, a Korean writer abroad, was dealtwith by using the theory of Freud and examined regarding a place. J une who has s urvived as`an orphan b y Korean War, Hector a s oldier of theKorean War, and Sylvie in <A New Orphanage of Hope> who takes care of warorphans suffer from severe post trauma stress disorder because of feeling guilty aboutsurvival alone after experiencing a terrible trauma incident by war. 11-year-old Jun,14-year-old Sylvie, and 20-year-old Hector who were thrown together by fate at <ANew Orphanage of Hope> were exposed to the trauma incident at an early age. In the course of refuge, June who lost all family to protect him got into a runningtrain desperately in order to only survive leaving his dying brother, but the guiltyabout surviving alone had suppressed her in her life as a stomach cancer towardthe end of the award at the early age of 47. The writer expressed her pain symbolicallyby setting the origin of Chapter1 and the ending of Chapter19 into an original traumascene. 『The Surrendered』 has the structure incorporated into the complete epic at theending after fragmented memories like a puzzle revealed little by little through aflashback. This says that this epic was never prepared and the trauma incident causedthe post trauma stress disorder continuously. The fragmented memories should berestored into the complete epic to heal the post trauma stress disorder. However, only the memory of the fact a real healing is running short for a real healing. Namely, self-concept should be changed. Hector entered the Korean War self-destructively to escape from a guilty that hemade his father die by leaving alone. However, he was shocked from a terriblescene that a young soldier killed himself by robbing a grenade. Sylvie of <A New Orphanage of Hope> also have an indelible trauma by war. Shortly after the Manchurian Incident, Sylvie who had to watch her parents killedby the Japanese military got married to a missionary Tanner, but couldn't lead anormal life, and fell into workaholism, abnormal sex indulgence and drug addiction. However, Sylvie died by the orphanage fire, and this fact gave June and Hectoranother trauma. In 『The Surrendered』, the battlefield, <A New Orphanage of Hope> and <SolferinoChurch> are the core essence of the interpretation. First, Korea that Korean Warbroke out in and Manchuria shortly after the Manchurian Incident are the place wherethree persons experienced the trauma incident. Second, <A New Orphanage of Hope>is the place where the three persons want to find new hope, but finally they gotanother trauma. Moreover, <Solferino Church> of Italy is considered as a very important place for healing the trauma to June and Hector. June and Hector want to return to Solferino that symbolize a violent and torturing war, heal the trauma and rest in peace. That is, Solferino Church gives a healing to June and Hector, Korean War victims. In 『The Surrendered』, June had lived the fierce life by following the survival instincts, on the other hand, Hector had lived the flabbily and depressed life. However, these two people are the same as the two sides of the same coin. In the case ofJune, the sadness looks overcame, but it doesn't mean that he escaped from a thornin the flesh entirely. It is concealed in the self. June and Hector are the survivor from the war, but in fact, the title 'The Surrendered'was made to mean that they surrendered to an inhuman war. The death of Sylviecan also be interpreted. The writer emphasizes the fatal character of the traumaby war one more time by using a healing through the death.
