Abstract

Korean-American writer Chang-rae Lee’s works have typically focused on the status of minorities in American society. In Lee’s novel The Surrendered, Sylvie, a white woman, is a minority member of society. She leads the novel’s religious discourse, suggesting a “religion of mercy,” as differentiated from an institutional religion. After her parents and first lover are killed by Japanese soldiers, she surrenders herself to sexual desire, which she expresses as a way of showing mercy. When she (a missionary wife) meets Hector (a Korean War veteran) and June (a war orphan) at New Hope orphanage, their war stories and desires for each other become intertwined. Sylvie dies in a fire set by June, with her death affirming that “mercy is the only true deliverance.” June and Hector make a pilgrimage to Solferino, Italy, tracing the path laid out in Sylvie’s book, A Memory of Solferino. In so doing, their journey causes them to face the truth of her death, and to accept death as a part of life. The Surrendered asks its readers to succumb to the other and to life, calling for the mercy which enables deliverance from war and death.
