Abstract
The text designed and described by the other in the past observed, categorized, and viewed ‘our culture’ from the perspective of the other. Epoche and empathy characteristic of phenomenological paradigms, were utilized, and orientalism was involved in this interpretive process. The knowledge of Korea formed the text after the experiences of others who came to Korea for different diplomatic, missionary, business, and expeditionary purposes were accumulated. However, the density of their experience of modernization was relatively higher than that of the people of Joseon at the time, but they did not reach the level of analyzing the Joseon dynasty from modes of universal cultural discourse or structurally. Outside observers mainly wanted to see what they wanted to see and focused only on what they were interested in. Ultimately, the image of Korea in the eyes of the other is consistently incoherent and fragmentary. Sometimes Joseon was viewed as a pre-modern, non-civilized society. Sometimes, Joseon was depicted as a miraculous sign. It was reproduced as a wonder they did not come across. The others’ interpretations of Joseon (including Japan’s and China’s) are multi-layered and arbitrary. Even though Joseon people already physically lived there, Joseon could have been an ‘empty space’ for realizing their desires or ideals. Depending on the choice of the other, a plethora of images of ‘Joseon (Korea)’ were made. Ironically, we are discovering our past through the ‘gaze of the other’. In the end, the modernity which the other hoped to transplant in Korea was reproduced in their language and in other words, through ‘the desire of the other.’ Still we are looking at our past which is foreign even to ourselves through the other’s eyes to understand how our identity has been formed and how we take for granted what is believed to be ‘ours’.
