Abstract
We attempt to enhance our understanding of rural in-migrants in Korea by an in-depth analysis of a group of migrants with a particular motivation. This group, which can be termed ‘alternative value group’, seems to have distinct features from other two groups, i.e. ‘economic group’ and ‘individualistic group’ respectively. Hence, we have examined the characteristics and social roles of the rural in-migrants with alternative values. Comparatively speaking, people who belong to the ‘alternative value group’ are highly educated middle class. They did not have social connection or relatives before moving to the village, while the local environment was an important consideration in choosing the site for moving. The in-migrants with alternative values are highly satisfied with their new lifestyle and quite self-sufficient. At the same time, they have high respect for agriculture and rural society. In addition, the rural in-migrants who belong to ‘alternative value group’ are more engaged and participatory in the local community. This social embeddedness is important resource for building a sustainable and democratic future of rural community. In the context of Korean rural society today, these new innovative actors may play an important role in exploring various alternatives such as social economy, social cooperatives, and alternative agri-food system.
