Abstract
This study analyzed the stability of the Post Pillar Cut-and-Fill Method, a type of cut-and-fill mining method, using three-dimensional continuum numerical analysis. The research was conducted on a tungsten mine located in Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon Province, South Korea. The mining plan of the mine was reviewed, and a numerical model was developed based on the stope design provided by the mining plan. Numerical analyses were performed for each excavation and backfilling stage to evaluate the stability of the Post Pillar Cut-and-Fill Method. The results indicate that the stability of the stopes can be ensured when the stopes are fully backfilled. However, as upper stopes are developed, an increase in the height of the post pillars leads to a reduction in their stability. Similar findings have been reported in previous studies, emphasizing the importance of maintaining an appropriate post pillar width-to -height ratio during stope development. In South Korea, not only are there no applications of the Post Pillar Cut-and-Fill Method, but there is also a lack of studies on the broader range of cut-and-fill mining methods. To secure the applicability of these mining methods in domestic mines, further research is needed to develop optimal stope design techniques tailored to domestic mining conditions. Additionally, advancements in backfilling processes and facility operation technologies will be essential for successful implementation.
