Abstract
The transition from the early poems to the later ones is worked out with T. S. Eliot’s conscious intention in The Hollow Men. Eliot tries to understand the multi-layered disrupted subject, caused by the dissolution of modern subject, synchronically in terms of individual psychology in his early poems, whereas he endeavors to recover the subject diachronically in the aspect of community in his later poems utilizing the form of dramatic writing. With Agamben’s dualistic concepts of ritual and play, Eliot intends to execute double tasks, questioning the raison d’être of modern ritual for maintaining the tradition and also creating a new ritual. Eliot proves the hierarchy of multi-layered subjects: (1) the hollow men’s weak souls, (2) Guy’s and Kurtz’s violent souls, and (3) Dante’s soul after his repentance, for the one-to-one correspondence to the orders of community, i.e., death’s dream kingdom, death’s twilight kingdom and death’s other kingdom. While the way of salvation is not suggested to the hollow men in The Waste Land, the creation of a new ritual is not impossible with the help of mysticism. In order to overcome the impasse caused by the vertical relationship of multi-layered subjects to the horizontal relationship expressed in the current language system, Eliot strives to create a new ritual with a new language system. While the world ends to the hollow men, there may be an ascetic, facing the same problem, endeavors to proceed to the grace of God with his invincible will and with the belief that it is a dark night of his soul. Thus the readers of The Hollow Men can choose the way between secular experiences leading to the despair in The Waste Land and religious faith in the later poems by the result of Eliot’s double tasks.
