Abstract

Abstract Yi Koo`s criticism of Jang Hyungang`s philosophy / Kim Yong-Hun This paper is on Yi Koo`s criticism of Jang Hyungang`s philosophy ― one of the famous neo-confucianists in the Chosun dynasty. Jang Hyungang belongs to T′oegye School, which was one of the two prominent(and rivalry) schools through the whole dynasty. His philosophy was, nevertheless, different from T´oegye's. First of all, he emphasized the unity of Li(principle) and Ch´i(material force). He thought that Tao, the universal process which all beings including the human must follow, is accomplished by the unity of Li and Ch´i. He compared Li and Ch´i to warp and woof. As a textile is woven by combining warps and woofs, Tao is fulfilled by combining Li and Ch´i. Ch´i is the product of Li. Nevertheless, In this process of universal development, Li is materialized and realized through Chi. In this sense, Chi is a kind of matter which completes Li. Yi Koo is a confucian of T`oegye`s School in Chosun Dynasty. he maintained that Li and Ch`i are not one being. And he dualized human mind into Li family and Chi family. While the original state of human nature, the four beginings, and the moral mind(the tao-mind) belong to Li family, the physical endowment of human nature, the seven emotions, and the non-moral mind(the human-mind) belong to Ch'i Family. The purpose of this dualization of human mind is politically to protect the School of T'oegye from that of Yulgok, metaphysically Li from Ch`i, and ethically the good from the evil. Because of Yi Koo`s this differentiation between Li and Chi, he criticized Jang Hyunguang for regarding Li and Ch`i as one. To sum up, according to Yi Koo, Jang Hyunguang`s theory is focused on Ch`i, and thereby, leads to the ethical nihilism.
