Abstract

"Quiet-sitting" (Jeong-jwa, 靜坐) is to calm oneself, and the reason and purpose for sitting quietly are different from each other not only in modern times but also in the past. It has many reasons and purposes, such as for health, for finding mind and body rest, for a study on the root of existence, etc. Like this, various theories of Quiet-sitting differ from school to school ranging from the posture of Quiet-sitting to a method, an effect, a phenomenon, a reason, and an ultimate stage. One same point among them is targeting actual specific body and mind. That is, the change of body results in the change of mind. Furthermore, Quiet-sitting is a practice. A philosophical basis behind this theory lies in Treatise of Human. The effects of Quiet-sitting such as meditation, Zen meditation, yoga, hypogastric breathing, etc. are turning out to be the development of studies in each field such as neuroscience, psychology, etc. associated with our body today. Science and medicine show how a state of quiet affects our body and what effects it produces. Moreover, regardless of the fact that religious people manage their heart through meditation, the effects of Zen meditation are widely known to ordinary people, and there are more and more people who sit quietly, and at the same time, the development of science made the relationship between people's body and mind much closer. Like this, the purposes for people to sit quietly are different, but the real purpose of quiet sitting is to establish the posture of people living rightly and realize the realities of life, not to be ideological, not to hope for an absurd miracle or not to pursue individual selfishness. When this Quiet-sitting is roughly categorized, there are ancient meditation, Quiet- sitting of Buddhism and Taoism, Quiet-sitting of Confucianism and the rest of Quiet-sitting. Among these, Quiet-sitting of Buddhism refers to "be sitting quietly," and a Zen priest in Zen meditation is a representative. Quiet-sitting that Confucian scholars refer to has a wide variety of meanings. Confucius scholars refer to not only the posture of Zen priests when they are in Zen meditation but the posture when they read at their desks as Quiet-sitting. In addition, They refer to the posture when they play go, fish, or sit quietly as Quiet-sitting. As such, Since Confucius scholars use Quiet-sitting in many different ways, it is not easy to define its concept uniformly. However, it can be seen that sitting quietly, concentrating one's mind and uniting minds are the same and not different.
