Abstract

This study aims to examine whether socio-economic deprivation influences depression among older adults living alone and whether the effect of socio-economic deprivation on depression is moderated by self-esteem. This study used the 18th wave of the Korean Welfare Panel Study with 2,113 older adults (aged 65 or above) living alone. Statistical analyses including descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis were processed with SPSS 27.0 and Process Macro Model 1. Key findings are as follows: First, socio-economic deprivation of the study sample was found to have negative effects on depression. Second, self-esteem of the study sample has negative impacts on depression. Last, the self-esteem was found to have moderation effects on the relationship between socio-economic deprivation and depression. This study concludes with several policy implications.
