Abstract

How does alcohol relate to the etiquette system of Confucian philosophy? Starting from this question, this paper aims to study the notion of drinking and ritual meaning of alcohol during the Zhou Dynasty(周代) focusing on the types of liquor, cups for drinking, and six uses of drinking poems from the Book of Poetry. The use of alcohol in drinking poems that appear in the Book of Poetry can be categorized in six groups: memorial service for ancestors, feast, reward, celebration, wishing for longevity, and farewell. Examining various use of alcohol in drinking poems that appear in the Book of Poetry, the process in which the notion of alcohol and drinking culture was absorbed into pivotal part of drinking etiquette becomes clearer. A strong sense of vigilance towards alcohol and a meticulous set of drinking etiquette can seem like a contradictory attitude toward drinking. However, in addition to social and political implications, alcohol was widely used during feasts, celebrations, congratulations, prayers, and farewells. Therefore, alcohol that appears in the drinking poems of the Book of Poetry was essential in the creation of drinking etiquette standards thanks to its essential characteristics and the spirit of courtesy and later became important symbols and codes of the etiquette culture of the Zhou Dynasty(周代).
