Abstract

Confucius’ humanity and courtesy expressed in Korean life and culture /Kim Duk-kyun “Letters are a bowl containing one’s culture and philosophy.” Like this old saying, Confucianism’s influence to Korean society started with introduction of Chinese characters. Confucianism was one of the greatest philosophies introduced earliest in the Korean society. Confucius’ philosophy has been dictating Korean people’s mind and life and has played a main role in Korea for a long time. The latter introduction of other religions such as Taoism and Buddhism also affected Korean society. Recently, Catholic and Protestant churches have also had a vast influence in the society. However, Confucius’ philosophy has always been in Korean people’s mind. Especially, the Confucius’ philosophy on humanity and community has played a very important role in the Korean society. In this study, I examined the contents and characteristics of Confucius’ humanity and courtesy. In addition, I also looked at how Confucius’ humanity and courtesy were expressed in Korean society and life. Even though there may be negative impacts of Confucianism and criticism on this philosophy, I didn’t analyze them in this study. I focused only on examining Confucius philosophy itself that was expressed in Korean life and culture.
