이 연구는 학생들의 다문화적 태도 및 외국인에 대한 태도를 살펴봄으로써 사회과 다문화교육의 과제를 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 수행된 것이다. 다문화교육은 학생들이 다문화적 태도를 함양하고 인종․민족, 선진국과 후진국에 따른 외국인에 대한 차별적 태도를 극복할 것을 역설하고 있다. 그러나 현실 세계에서는 ‘가난한’ 외국인과 ‘성공한’ 외국인에 대한 태도가 차별적으로 나타나는 사례들이 많이 존재한다. 즉 외국인에 대한 학생들의 차별적 태도의 원인은 인종․민족, 출신국이라는 주효과에 의한 것이라기보다는 인종․민족, 출신국 과 외국인의 ‘사회경제적 지위’와의 상호작용효과에 의해 발생될 가능성이 매우 높다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 외국인에 대한 차별적 태도에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 인종․민족, 출신국과 더불어 ‘외국인 개인의 사회경제적 지위’를 주요하게 다루고자 한다. 이를 위해 수도권 인문계 고등학생 330명을 대상으로 다문화적 태도, 외국인에 대한 부정적 감정 및 사회적 거리감과 관련된 설문조사를 실시하고 결과를 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 학생들은 ‘불완전한’ 다문화적 태도를 가지고 있었으며 인종․민족, 출신국의 경제력과 같은 신분 위계구조가 외국인에 대한 차별적 태도에 영향을 주는 것으로 드러났다. 주목할 것은 ‘외국인의 사회경제적지위’가 차별적 태도에 영향을 주는 의미있는 변수로 확인되었으며 인종․민족, 출신국과 ‘외국인의 사회경제적지위’의 상호작용효과 또한 통계적으로 유의하게 나타났다는 것이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 현재의 다문화교육 논의는 지나치게 인종․민족적 측면에 비중을 두어 진행되고 있다. 이런 면에서 본 연구의 결과는 앞으로의 사회과 다문화교육이 ‘인종․민족적 다양성, 문화적 다양성의 인정’뿐만 아니라 ‘사회경제적지위의 다양성 인정’에 대한 문제까지 비중 있게 다루어야 함을 보여준다.
Abstract
This paper is intended to understand students' multicultural attitude as well as their attitude toward foreigners in general. I conducted a survey of 330 high school students. The results are as follows: (1) The majority of respondents showed positive response on Perceived Consequences of Multiculturalism and Tolerance; however, only a small number of them agreed on Multicultural Program Attitudes. (2) Students' attitude toward foreigners turned out to be discriminating according to different groups where the foreigners belong to. In addition, as precedent studies have emphasized, a foreigner's status hierarchy such as ethnicity, economic strength of his country also affects on students' attitude toward foreigners. (3) However, a foreigner's economic hierarchy(i.e. socioeconomic status) has greater influence on students' discriminating attitude toward foreigners rather than a foreigner's status hierarchy. These results have crucial implications as follows. First, this result reveals some of the limitations of culture relativism, which has been stressed in social education so far. So I propose that multicultural education should be implemented with the emphasis on recognition·support·manage toward foreigners. Second, education on race·ethnicity as well as recognition and acceptance toward the foreigners from lower status hierarchy is still valid as the content of multicultural education. Finally, it is notable that economic hierarchy(i.e. SES) was the most influential factor in deciding students' discriminating attitude toward foreigners. This suggests that the matter on 'recognition of various socioeconomic status' should be given more attention as well as 'recognition of racial, ethnic and cultural diversity' in social studies education.
