Abstract

This study aims at analyzing Chunchucheongyeongrog (A commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals) to explain the characteristics and the significance of Kwon Geun’s interpretation of the Spring and Autumn Annals in the history of thought in old Korea. As the first commentary on Confucian classics in Korea, this book plays an important role in understanding the academic interest and traditions during the time when the commentary was written. He thoroughly analyzed the Confucian thought of righteousness and the guiding principle of Confucius in writing the Annals based on four major criteria. Furthermore, he tried to interpret the annals from his unique perspective as well as compressively examining previous Chinese theories including Three Commentaries on the Spring and Autumn Annals and Hu An-guo's Commentary of the Spring and Autumn Annals. Based on objective and thorough examinations of Chinese Confucian theories in his days, he selectively adopted those theories and applied them to his book. His interpretive methods presented in the book have not only offered the beginning of Korea’s independent study of Confucian classics but also significantly contributed to the development of the study.
