Abstract

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is useful for evaluation of the body composition and nutritional state in human body. The most frequent method of estimation of the body composition and compartment by BIA is the use of regression equations. These equations generally make use of the predictive power of the resistance index because it is proportional to the mass of conductive tissue in the body. In the literature, there are numerous BIA equation of body composition. However, even the use of age-specific equations could lead to substantial estimation errors. To avoid the multiplication of population-, sex-, and age-specific BIA equations to predict body composition, the direct use of resistance (R) and reactance (Xc) is valuable. In the body, highly conductive lean tisses contain large amounts of water and conducting electrolytes, and the resistance (R) can be represented for total body water and body size. The reactance is a measure of the volume of cell membrane capacitance and cell membrane integrity. Phase angle is a linear method of measureing the relationship between resistance and reactance. Lower phase angles apear to be consistent with low reactance and either cell death or a breakdown in the selective permeability of the cell membrane. Higher phase angle appear to be consistent with high reactance and large quantities of intact cell membranes and body cell mass. Now we can use BIA for evaluation of body composition and statement as well as estimation of the body composition indirectly.
