본 연구의 목적은 MLB 타자의 경기력 유형을 분류하고, 유형 조합의 구성이 팀의 승률에 영향을 미치는지 실증적으로 검증하는 것이다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 군집분석, 분산분석, 고정효과 패널회귀분석을 수행하였으며, 회귀분석 절차에서는 조절효과 분석을 통해 분류된 타자 유형 조합에 따른 승률 변화량을 추정하였다. 군집분석 결과 타자의경기력은 1)‘주루-컨택’유형, 2)‘장타-타점’유형, 3)‘하위타선’유형으로 구분되었다. 구분된 군집 간 경기기록에 대한평균차이검증을 위해 분산분석을 수행한 결과 군집분석에 투입한 13개 변수 모두에서 통계적 유의성을 나타냈다. 다음 절차로 분류된 타자 경기력 유형을 각 선수의 실제 소속 팀에 대입하여, MLB 팀마다 분포하는 타자의 유형이팀의 시즌 누적 승률에 영향을 미치는지 검증하였다. 그 결과 Cluster 1, 2, 3에 대한 다양한 조합 중 ‘Cluster 1*Cluster 2’ 조합에서 통계적으로 유의한 상호작용효과를 나타냈다. 이러한 결과는 시즌, 팀 특성, 투수력의 효과를통제한 상황에서 Cluster 2유형으로 분류된 강타자가 팀에 다수 존재할지라도 ‘주루-컨택’ 기반의 선수가 팀에 존재하지 않는다면 그 효과성은 크지 않을 수 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구의 결과는 프로야구 현장에서 타자선발 및 타순관련 전략 수립을 위한 실증적 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This study aims to classify the performance types of MLB hitters and empirically verify if the combination of these types affects the team's winning percentage. To achieve this, we employed cluster analysis, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and fixed-effects panel regression. In the fixed-effects panel regression analysis, we estimated the changes in the winning percentage based on the classified combinations of hitter types through moderation effect analysis. According to the cluster analysis, hitters' performance was categorized into three clusters: 1) 'Base running & Contact' type, 2) 'Slugging-RBI' type, and 3) 'lower order' type. ANOVA, performed to verify the mean differences in game records among the distinguished clusters, demonstrated statistical significance across all 13 variables included in the cluster analysis. Subsequently, the study verified if the distribution of hitter types among MLB teams affects the cumulative season-winning percentage of each team by applying the classified hitter performance types to each player's actual team affiliation. The result showed statistically significant interaction effects in the combination of Cluster 1*Cluster 2 among various combinations of Cluster 1, 2, and 3. These results suggest that even if there are slugging hitters within the team, the effectiveness might not be substantial if there are no players type of the 'Base running-contact' based Cluster 1 within the team, when controlling for season, team characteristics, and pitching performance. These findings could serve as empirical evidence for developing strategies related to the selection of hitters and batting order in professional baseball.
