혜강 최한기의 인식론은 19세기라고 하는 시대적 특성과 맞물려 그 탄생에서부터 서양철학의 영향이 크게 작용했다. 현재 혜강 인식론에 나타난 서양 철학의 영향을 언급하고 혜강 인식론과 서구 인식론 사이의 관계성을 논한 연구는 다수 이루어진 상태이다. 특히 혜강의 인식론을 경험주의로 볼 것인가에 대한 주제는 제법 첨예한 논쟁의 장을 형성하기도 했다. 그러나 혜강 인식론의 위상과 성격을 보다 선명하게 드러내기 위해서는 비교분석의 지평을 기존에 이루어졌던 고대와 중세를 넘어 서구 근대 인식론까지 넓혀가야 할 필요성이 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 먼저 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스로부터 시작되어 중세 아우구스티누스와 토마스 아퀴나스로 이어지는 서구 전통 인식론의 계보 상에서 혜강 인식론의 위상을 가늠한 뒤, 다시 데카르트와 로크로 이어지는 서구 근대 인식론의 장위에서 비교분석을 전개해 나가게 될 것이다. 총체적인 역사적 맥락에서 이루어지는 이러한 비교분석을 통해 본 연구는 혜강 인식론의 위상과 성격을 보다 선명하게 드러냄은 물론 그 과정에서 도출된 인식론 상의 문제점이 무엇인지를 정확히 파악하고, 나아가 향후 현대 담론으로 이어질 기학 연구의 향방을 가늠해 본다.
Abstract
In line with the times of the 19th century, The epistemology of Hyegang Choi Han - gi was influenced by Western philosophy from its birth. There are a lot of studies to discuss the influence of Western philosophy in Hyegang's epistemology and the relation between Hyegang's epistemology and Western epistemology. Especially, the theme of whether Hyegang's epistemology is viewed as empiricism has been a point of controversy. However, in order to clarify the phase and nature of Hyegang's epistemology, it is necessary to extend the horizon of comparative analysis beyond the existing ancient and medieval times to modern Western epistemology. First, we gauge the status of Hyegang's epistemology in the genealogy of western traditional epistemology. To the next, We will develop a comparative debate on the modern epistemology of Western modernity that leads to Descartes and Locke. This comparative discussion in the overall historical context reveals more clearly the nature of Hyegang's epistemology, precisely identifies the problems of epistemology derived from the process, and then gauges the direction of future studies of epistemology
