Abstract
The purpose of this study is to apply the Monte-Carlo Simulation to a volleyball game to verify the degree of influence of a serve on the score and proposes winning conditions according to consecutive winning or losing points. To achieve this, 98 games(351 sets) for men and women from the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 season were collected as research data, and the Monte-Carlo Simulation divided points scored on serve into six stages(20%, 30%, 35%, 40%, 45%, and 50%) to generate 1 million simulated data sets for each stage. The Oracle Crystal Ball Ver 1.0 software was used for Monte Carlo Simulation and MS-Excel to calculate the frequency of consecutive win and loss of points for actual game data and simulated data. A test was conducted to verify the similarity between the two data sets. The significance level for all tests was set to =.05. The probability distribution for consecutive win and loss of points from the simulated data was obtained by setting the probability of points scored upon a serve at 35% and the study results found it identical to the probability distribution for consecutive win and loss of points observed in actual game data. Therefore, the probability of points scored on a serve was determined to decrease to 15%, and the winning conditions according to consecutive win and loss of points is proposed as follows. First, winning consecutive points in one set is set to four or more. Second, losing consecutive points in one set is set to three or less. Such results imply that the momentum of winning or losing consecutive points determine a victory, which occurs at 3.5 points. Moreover, because the probability of winning points on serve decreases, teams that start the game with serve have a win rate of 48%. The results of this study can be used as tactical data as per game situations in volleyball games.
