Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop a 50kHz-segmental-BIA-based prediction equation for estimating the appendicular muscle mass comparable to DXA in the elderly. For this purpose of this study, the appendicular skeletal muscle mass was measured by DXA for 189 elderly people (70-94 years old), and a 50kHz bioimpedance parameters (R, Xc, Z, R index, Z index) were measured. According to the internal cross-validation procedure, the total of 186 subjects were divided into 162 estimation equation development groups and 66 cross-validation testing groups, and regression development exploration and feasibility analysis were conducted. In the estimation equation at the development stage, the coefficient of determination was 91.4%, the estimated standard error was 1.13kg ASM, confidence variation was 6.4%, and VIF was 2.50 ~ 4.79. The estimated appendicular muscle mass (17.4±3.47kg) in cross-validity study was not different from the measured appendicular muscle mass (17.3±3.58kg) (p = .388), where the coefficient of determination was 92.4%, total error 1.02kg ASM, confidence variation 6.0. The correlation between residual and mean appendicular muscle mass was not significant (p = .085). Also, the individual error was 85.7%. As a result, the final estimation equation is ASM = 0.345H2/R – 2.431sex + 0.079W + 1.717; R2 = 0.914, SEE = 1.09kg, CV = 6.0%. In conclusion, an equation for estimating the BIA-based appendicular skeletal muscle mass was developed appropriately, and when this equation is applied to the elderly in Korea, it is considered that it can be applied to individual measurement fields as well as population measures.
