Abstract

This study examines how Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism conceptualized breath and incorporated it as a key element of their respective cultivation practices. By analyzing foundational texts from each tradition, the paper seeks to reassess the therapeutic significance and philosophical implications of breath. In Confucianism, breath regulation(調息) was systematized in Zhu Xi’s Tiaoxijam(調息箴), where it is understood as a bodily technique integrated with jingzuo(靜坐) and moral jing(敬), helping to stabilize emotions and support ethical cultivation. In Buddhism, the ĀnāpānasatiSutta(安般守意經) presents breath practice as a method for realizing the nature of existence and deconstructing the illusion of a fixed self, thus serving as a structured path toward meditative absorption(禪定) and wisdom(智慧). In Daoism, the Zhuangzi(莊子) illustrates the breathing of the “True Person”(眞人) and the “Divine Person”(神人), portraying breath as a means of uniting with the Dao(道) and harmonizing with the vitality of the cosmos. Despite their differing metaphysical frameworks, all three traditions regard breath as a vehicle for integrating body and mind, as well as for connecting the human being with the greater order of the universe. Drawing on classical texts, this paper analyzes the philosophical meanings assigned to breath in East Asian traditions and explores how these perspectives might be reinterpreted as resources for healing and existential reflection in contemporary contexts.
