Abstract

This paper reinterprets the female narratives composed by Songsa Gi Uman (1846–1916) in the jeon (傳, biographical) format, situating them within the reconfiguration of women’s norms in late Joseon, particularly after the seventeenth-century wars. Among 36 jeon in Songsa’s collected works, 15 (approximately 41%) concern women. Through close reading, the study examines how narratives of hajong (下從)—women committing suicide to follow their husbands—coexisted and interacted with narratives of simjong (心從)—women continuing their husbands’ will by maintaining the household and ancestral rites. First, the study demonstrates that hajong was not a timeless product of the “virtuous-woman ideology” but rather a historically constituted choice, shaped by structural upheavals such as the state’s commendation policies, the reformulation of chastity discourse, the issue of repatriated female captives, and transformations in inheritance and ritual systems (toward primogeniture) after the wars. Second, while Songsa invoked the righteous fierceness (義烈) of hajong to criticize contemporary “traitorous officials,” he simultaneously elevated the long-term discipline of simjong—filial service to parents-in-law, succession of heirs, and the completion of the three-year mourning period—as “true fierceness” (眞烈). Third, underlying these judgments is the religious affect and public performativity of Confucianism in Joseon, through which both women’s deaths and women’s endurance were imbued with meaning as practices sustaining public order by mediating righteousness and rectitude. Furthermore, the paper critiques prior scholarship that has either erased the voices of hajong women or reduced them wholesale to “victims of patriarchy,” and argues that Songsa’s texts instead made visible women’s agency—whether in decision or endurance—as forms of ethical and religious practice. By reframing Songsa’s female narratives through the triple lens of historical-social context, performativity, and religious affect, this study recovers the multilayered modalities of loyalty and chastity in women’s lived practices, moving beyond linear evaluations of Confucian gender discourse.
