환경교육은 평생교육 차원과 윤리적 가치관의 문제가 핵심이다. 평생교육 차원의 환경교육이 의미하는 바는 초등 환경교육의 필요성을 제고하고 있으며, 윤리적 가치관의 문제를 핵심으로 삼는 문제는 환경교육의 방향성을 제시하고 있다고 이해할 수 있다. 그러나 초등학교에서는 독립된 환경 교과가 없어서 관련 내용을 여러 교과에서 분산적으로 교육하고 있는 실정이고, 이러한 분산적 교육은 각 교과를 관통하는 표준이나 체계성 측면에서 비판의 여지가 있다. 또한, 윤리적 가치관 차원의 환경교육은 초등학교 도덕과 교육을 통하여 이행되고는 있지만, 단지 ‘환경윤리’ 부분에만 집중하는 형편이고, 내용 체계나 영역은 “자연과의 관계”에 편중되고 있다. 환경 문제 또는 생태 문제는 범지구적인 잇슈이자 미래세대를 위한 핵심적인 교육 내용이라고 할 수 있다. 또한, 환경교육은 환경에 관한 교육적 차원의 접근을 표방하는 것으로, 학교환경교육은 물론 사회환경교육 차원에서도 교육 목표와 교육 내용 그리고 교육 방법 등 간의 유기적인 연관관계를 통하여 구조적인 정합성을 갖추어야 한다. 유학(儒學)사상은 성인(聖人)이나 군자(君子)로 표방되는 윤리적 가치관 함양의 문제를 중시하며, 지행일치(知行一致)를 통해 실천적인 삶을 실현하고자 한다. 바로 이러한 지점은 교육 목적과 목표 그리고 목표 영역을 구분하고 체계화 하는 현대의 교육에 시사하는 바가 있다.
Abstract
Environmental education essentially involves two key dimensions: lifelong education and ethical values. The meaning of environmental education from the perspective of lifelong education lies in enhancing the necessity of environmental education at the elementary schools, while the emphasis on ethical values can be understood as providing a sense of direction for environmental education. However, in elementary schools, there is no independent subject dedicated to environmental education; instead, related topics are dispersed across various subjects. This fragmented approach invites criticism for its lack of standards and systematic coherence that transcend individual subjects. Furthermore, environmental education based on ethical values is mainly conducted through moral education in elementary schools, yet it tends to focus narrowly on the topic of “environmental ethics” and its content and domain are largely confined to the “relationship with nature,” Environmental and ecological issues are global concerns and constitute a core educational topic for future generations. Environmental education, which advocates an educational approach to environmental matters, must establish structural coherence by ensuring an organic interconnection among educational goals, content, and methods not only in school-based environmental education but also within the broader context of social environmental education. Confucianism places great importance on ethical values as embodied in the ideals of the sage (聖人) and the gentleman (君子), emphasizing the unity of knowledge and action (知行一致) as a means to realize a life of practical virtue. This aspect of Confucian thought offers significant implications for modern education, which distinguishes and systematizes educational purposes, goals, and goal domains.
