Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the level of knowledge of body composition between personal trainers and members, and to identify whether there were differences in knowledge levels depending on the duration of membership enrollment. Additionally, it sought to define the perceptions of members about body composition information. A survey was conducted targeting trainers and members at commercial fitness facilities located in cities A and B. A total of 338 questionnaires were distributed, 263 were collected, and after excluding 9 with excessive missing values, 254 were used for data analysis. The knowledge level of the trainer group was significantly higher than that of the member group. In contrasts among three member groups and the trainer group, the trainer group also showed higher knowledge levels. Among the member groups, the long-term group (24 months or more) showed a significantly higher knowledge level compared to the short-term group (less than 6 months). Concerning ‘the necessity of body composition instruction’ both men and women showed high frequencies of a positive response (Men: 89.9%, Women: 93.4%). The proportion of women wishing to lose weight even if detrimental to their health was found to be higher (23.7%) than that of men (8.5%). In conclusion, 1) trainers’ levels of knowledge about body composition was higher than members and, 2) members who had participated for a long term understood more about body composition comparing to short-term participated members. To improve the understanding and appropriate utilization of body composition information, it is required to develop an instruction manual for body composition education and apply it in the field.
