Abstract

This study aims to develop an artificial intelligence model that predicts the pitch type and location of the fifth pitch following a 2-balls, 2-strikes count, based on actual game data from Major League Baseball (MLB) pitchers. To this end, a two-stage prediction architecture was designed using a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) algorithm. In Stage 1, the model estimated the probability () of the pitch type using the physical characteristics and contextual information of the four preceding pitches. In Stage 2, this probability was incorporated as an additional input channel to classify the pitch location (inside vs. outside). The model's performance was evaluated using temporally split datasets, and the optimal F1-score threshold was determined on the validation set. The model incorporating Stage 1 probabilities (with-prob) outperformed the baseline model without them, and a McNemar test showed the statistical significance of this improvement (p < .001). Furthermore, visualization of LSTM-based predictions enabled intuitive comparisons between predicted and actual pitch locations, facilitating the identification of conditions with low predictability as well as patterns with high strategic utility (e.g., consistently accurate predictions for specific combinations). These findings suggest that the proposed model can inform threshold calibration by pitch type, probability adjustment, and feature enhancement for breaking balls, thereby contributing to both the refinement of pitch prediction models and the formulation of data-driven in-game strategies.
