Abstract
This study focused on the psychological factors of aggressive driving by confirming that motives and psychological characteristics are related to driving behavior. For this purpose, the mediating effect of anger rumination and the moderating effect of empathy were examined in the relationship between narcissism and aggressive driving. The study included 255 male drivers aged between 20 and 60 years, who had more than 1 year of driving experience in the country. The data were collected with the two dimensional Narcissistic tendency, the Driving Anger Expression Inventory, the K-Anger Rumination Scale, and an empathy scale. The results showed higher levels of aggressive driving in the group of drivers who were 30-39 years of age and those who had 2-5 years of driving experience. The relationship between other-dependent narcissism and aggressive driving was mediated by anger rumination. Specifically, it was found that retaliation rumination among the subfactors of anger rumination is partially mediated between other-dependent narcissism and aggressive driving. It was also found that cognitive empathy moderated the level of other-dependent narcissism and aggressive driving. Aggressive driving behavior increased when other-dependent narcissism was high and cognitive empathy was low. Based on these findings, we discuss the implications, limitations, and suggestions for further study.
