Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effects of emotional regulation according to reappraisal treatment conditions in the situation of triggering negative emotions in college students with interpersonal trauma. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups, that is positive humor reappraisal group (n = 21), negative humor reappraisal group (n = 21), cognitive reappraisal group (n = 23) and control group (n = 20). All participants completed the valence and arousal measuring task. The results showed that all three reappraisal groups had higher valence measures than the control group and the valence measure was the highest in the negative humor reappraisal group when negative emotions were triggered. And the level of arousal was lower in the negative humor reappraisal group than in the control group. This suggests that cognitive reappraisal, including reappraisal of negative humor, is effective to regulate negative emotions in interpersonal situations.
