Abstract
Given the influence of socio-environmental factors on clients’ presenting problems, there have been calls for counseling psychologists to expand their role beyond traditional counseling and psychotherapy and to embrace social justice principles. Whereas counseling psychologists should develop self-awareness and cultural sensitivity to work with clients from marginalized groups, counseling psychologists also contribute to social change by adopting a macro-level approach and helping social problems more visible. This article introduces concepts of social justice, starting from definition of social justice to discussion of multicultural counseling theory, implementation of social justice, and social justice training models. Finally, this article discusses how to conduct social justice research, specifically Participatory Action Research.
