Abstract
The concept of the will, which has been discussed in the theory of the mind (xinxinglun 心性論), is one of the most important issues in Confucianism. The Cannon of Mind (Xinjing 心經) summarizes the human mind in terms of Confucian internalism, with quotations from Kongzi, Mengzi, and the Neo-Confucians. “The Diagram of the Study of the Mind (Xinxuetu 心學圖),” which is presented at the beginning of the book, briefly but clearly discusses the meaning of human will in Confucianism. With the diagram, I grasp several philosophical implications of Confucian concept of the controling will in terms of moral psychology and virtue ethics as follows. First, Confucianism accepts compatibilism by suggesting that we have the controlling will as well as deterministic tendencies such as the human mind (renxin 人心) and the Way’s mind (daoxin 道心). Second, an agent who has the controlling will can develop one's moral emotions by Six Cases of Conquering the Human Mind and Six Cases of Preserving the Way’s Mind. Third, the controlling will is the basis of our various moral emotions including Confucian emotions of filial piety (xiao 孝), respect (gong 恭), and benevolence (ren 仁). Finally, the concept of the controlling will gives us theoretical foundation of why Confucian five characters are different from each other and why we ought to have moral responsibility for our behaviors.
