질서와 분배의 측면에서 義 개념의 연속성 고찰 ― 『논어』까지 텍스트를 중심으로 ―

이 논문은 ‘의’의 자형(字形)부터 중국 고전 중의 초기텍스트를 분석하여, ‘의’라는 개념이 어떠한 의미의 연속성을 가지고 있는지 고찰하는 것이다. 의가 가지고 있는 의미의 연속성에는 ‘질서’와 ‘분배’의 문제와 지속적으로 관여하고 있다. 먼저 자형(字形) 분석과 초기적 문헌의 분석을 통하여 어원과 관련된 ‘의(義)’의 의미는 크게 ‘질서’와 ‘분배’의 맥락으로 이해할 수 있다. 즉 ‘의’는 왕(수장)을 중심으로 하는 사회적 위계질서의 확립한다는 의미를 가지고 있다. 왕은 공동체 구성원들에게 각자의 역할과 차지할 수 있는 몫을 분배하고, 구성원은 그 분계를 분명하게 지켜 수장을 중심으로 하는 공동체의 질서에 복무한다. 의는 이러한 질서를 공고하게 유지시키고 정당성을 확보하는 측면에서 작용하고 있음을 살필 수 있다. 이러한 관점은 공자로 이어지는데, 그가 불의하다고 파악했던 문제는 크게 ‘(봉건적) 공동체 질서의 붕괴’ㆍ‘사적소유에 대한 욕망의 확대’라는 두 가지인데, 이 문제들은 질서와 분배의 문제와 연결된다. 그리고 이러한 불의를 극복하기 위하여 공동체의 질서를 수호하고 이익의 정당성에 대한 반성과 양보 미덕의 실천이라는 두 가지 측면에서 공자가 언급한 ‘의’의 의미를 고찰할 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper analyzes the initial text from the shape of Chinese character Yi 義 to consider what meaning of continuity the concept of Yi has. The continuity of Yi is constantly involved in the issue of ‘order’ and ‘distribution’. First, the meaning of Yi related to the etymology can be largely understood in the context of ‘order’ and ‘distribution’ through the analysis of the shape of the Chinese character and early literature. In other words, Yi means establishing a social hierarchy centered on the king. The king distributes his role and share to the members of the community, and the members clearly keep their boundaries and serve for the order of the community centered on the king. It can be seen that Yi works in terms of maintaining this order firmly and securing justification. This perspective leads to Confucius. There are two main problems that he identified as unfair: the collapse of the (feudal) community order and the expansion of the desire for private ownership, which are related to the problems of order and distribution. The meaning of Yi mentioned by Confucius can be considered in two aspects: defending the order of the community, reflecting on the justification of profit, and practicing the virtue of concession in order to overcome this injustice.
