Abstract
Until recently in the field of early China, scholars have pictured the intellectual study and philosophy that are based on the model of lineal development of Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties. This model, in which received texts state the lineal descent of the three dynasties, positions Confucius as a successful successor to the cultures of the three dynasties. Here, Confucius is narrated as a cultural icon who succeeded to the authority dominated by the ancestry in the Zhou culture. However, not only has the narrative, which Han compilers and archives basically constituted, been confronted with the challenge brought in by new archaeological discoveries and manuscripts, but it also overlooks the variety of cultures and regions in understanding Confucius’s identity and Confucian traditions. Such a model of explanation cannot avoid the accusation that a regional culture outside the orthodox of Xia/Shang/Zhou tradition was deliberately excluded for Confucius’s identity and his traditions. In terms of the regional background and cultural identity of the Kong family, I interpret the starting point of Ru community revolving around Confucius as outside the influence of the Zhou culture, and explain a tension in ritual practice between the Zhou culture and that of a region. This understanding of the relationship between the Zhou culture and Yi culture leads us to adopt an orientation to tracking Confucian traditions after the death of Confucius.
