Despite the admirable cultural heritage, the artistic tradition of Myanmar has been little known today to outer world. This is mainly explained by the fact that for much of the last fifty years Myanmar has been under the military rule unwilling to open the country. In this respect, the tradition of lacquerware is also the case without exception. To recognize the tradition of lacquer craft in Myanmar leads us deeply to understand its cultural and society, since the lacquerware has been used in a variety of cultural and social activities. This paper, therefore, is mainly aimed at examining the historical tradition and sociocultural meanings of Myanmar lacquerware craft. In addition, the paper will describe the history of the lacquerware yun, a derived word from Tai neighbors, indicating its origin, and scrutinize the basic material for lacquer production, various types of traditional lacquerwares.
