Abstract
This study is aimed at examining the characteristics of primitive expression in the German Tanztheater and unveiling its social and artistic meanings. To this end, I first consider how avant-garde artists in the early twentieth century came to appreciate 'primitive' and how to embrace free expression faithful to instinct in their works. At the beginning of the 20th century, in the state of social and political turmoil, they sympathized with the pain, loneliness, death, and fear of the petit bourgeois, and they recognized the 'barbarism' and 'amusement' in search of the source of humanity. Furthermore, through 'montage' and 'distance setting' techniques, they portrayed cruelty and tragedy in their works. Oskar Schlemmer, who continued to perform abstract movements with Kurt Jooss, a representative figure of the German dancing scene in the 20s and 30s who laid the foundation for Tantzttheater, also followed the avant-garde artistic expression. Under this artistic background, the German Tantzttheater was completed and representative runners Kresnik, Bohner, Hoffmann, Linke, and Bausch also combined the tragedy and amusement with the expressions of free emotions, which embodied the 'primitive' elements that avant-garde artists pursued.
