Abstract

This study writes the historiography of Korea's first private professional ballet company, Universal Ballet, as a nar rative of making dancers, repertoire, and audience, respectively, under the concept of ‘making a ballet company’. It attempts to write a vivid historiography of how the company went through obstacles from its inception to the present day to become a large-scale ballet company. Since its early days of inviting overseas dancers and staffs, Universal Ballet has focused on strengthening the capabilities of its dancers and developing a diverse repertoire ranging from classical Russian ballet to ethnic and contemporary ballet. It has also specialized in public relations since the 2000s, expanding its audience base and playing a pivotal role in the Korean ballet scene. In doing so, this study aims to emphasize that a ballet company is not an abstract concept or a solid institution, but a collective product, the result of heterogeneous experiences and trial and error.
