Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the firm's earnings management types and cost behavior using analytical models and to analyze the difference between Korea and Japan. The results of analyzing the relationship between earnings management types and cost behavior are as follows. In the case of SG&A costs, In the group that management for upward earnings through accruals, Japanese firms showed more anti-stickiness behavior than Korean firms. In other words, upward Earning managements through a more aggressive cost-cutting strategy is performed. In the group with downward earnings management through real activities, Korean firms showed relatively strong cost stickiness behavior than Japanese firms. This study empirically confirmed that there is a differential relationship between earnings management type and cost behavior. This has contributed to providing a new perspective between management accounting areas such as cost behavior, and financial accounting such as earnings management. Because the costs reported in the financial statements reflect not only actual business activities but also accounting perceptions. And, by comparing and analyzing the cost behavior between Korean and Japanese firms, empirical evidence on the characteristics of earnings management and cost management in the relevant countries is presented. Since both Korea and Japan have developed similar cultural, legal, and economic systems, the results of this comparative study suggest several implications. In spite of these various contributions, the model used for earnings management classification in this study has a limitation that it can not be free from the problem of measurement error due to the statistical limitations.
