Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the change of discourse on Pungnamje, the festival with the longest history in Jeonju. The main change of the discourse is from the discourse on traditional festival to the discourse which focuses on economic effects. This is also accompanied with the change of views on festival locations in Jeonju. Until the 1980s, Dan-o (May 5th in lunar calendar), the day of Jeonju citizens, and Nan-jang (the market with full of enthusiasm and disorderly activities) were the key words to describe Pungnamje. During those days, the festival was understood as an opportunity to escape ordinary life, to feel community over individuals, and to play for fun. From this perspective, the festival was called local traditional festival. But from the 1990s, the economic discourse gathered more influence and changed the festival. The city government changed the location of the festival from the traditional places with open space to Hanok (Korean house) village in order to attract more people to Hanok village. The city government also introduced programs to sell various products produced in the city area. In these condition, people and festival experts rethinks about the identity of the festival and the conflict over the festival identity started. The case of Pungnamje change shows that festival has changed its characteristics through various discourses and also shows that the locations, the discourses and the changes are interconnected. The coexistence and conflict of two different discourses reveals what we need to consider and to reflect in the process of the economic turn of local festivals.
