Abstract

Korean companies including Korean airlines operating in China are actively engaging in CSR activities in order to target Chinese consumers. While these CSR activities are highly valued, opinions are divided as to whether they are linked to the financial performance of companies. If the favorable attitude of Chinese consumers towards our national airlines and companies that actively practice CSR is separate from their purchasing behavior towards our products, then CSR activities carried out by our companies in China may be considered a responsible and ethical investment from an obligatory perspective, but it is difficult to view it as a strategically effective investment. Therefore, it is necessary to examine how the CSR activities being carried out by Korean companies in China are affecting the attitudes of Chinese consumers towards their products. This study focuses on consumers’ perceptions of companies on the warmth-competence dimension, how Chinese consumers perceive Korean companies that engage in CSR activities on the warmth-competence dimension, and how the warmth-competence perceptions of Korean companies affect the attitude toward the company’s product. In addition, this study intended to examine the moderating effect of consumer ethnocentrism on these influences. This study conducted an empirical analysis after conducting an online survey of Chinese consumers. Empirical results showed that the higher the perceived competence and warmth of Chinese consumers toward our company, the more positive their attitude toward the company’s products. Also, these influences were moderated by consumer ethnocentrism. Specifically, it was found that the perceived competence and warmth had a greater impact on attitude when consumer ethnocentrism was low compared to when it was high. These research results have academic contributions in that they reconfirmed the results of previous studies on warmth-competence perception. In addition, it has an academic contribution in that it supports the study that CSR activities have a positive effect among the previous mixed studies on the effect of corporate products on consumers’ attitudes. Finally, it has an academic contribution in that it expanded previous studies on the moderating role of consumer ethnocentrism. This study provides the following practical implications for Korean companies in China, including Korean airlines. First, CSR activities carried out in China can be an effective strategic investment that not only represents the right thing to do, but also contributes to financial growth. Even if CSR activities do not yield short-term financial results, continuous CSR efforts can increase the perception among Chinese consumers that our companies are competent and warm, and this perception can help to enhance positive attitudes towards our products and increase sales. Additionally, it is important to understand and appropriately respond to Chinese consumers’ ethnocentrism. It is necessary to prioritize targeting consumers with lower levels of ethnocentrism.
