서양의 고문서 관리와 연구의 전통 - 이탈리아의 'Historical Archives'를 중심으로 -

본 논문의 궁극적인 목적은 현대 이전에 생산된 고문서들에 대한 관리와 연구의 전통에 대해 살펴보고 이를 우리의 기록물관리 현실에 비추어보는 것이다. 우리나라의 경우에는 작년의 「공공기록물 관리에 관한 법률」에도 불구하고 역사적 가치의 기록물에 대한 관리가 정책적인 관심에서 벗어나 있기에 자성과 대책마련이 시급한 상황이다. 유럽의 고문서 전통은 그들의 역사만큼이나 오래되었다. 특히 중세 1000년의 장구한 세월 속에서 축적된 기록문화유산은 내용의 가치, 내용을 담는 용기로서의 가치 그리고 문자나 서체와 같은 역사코드로서의 가치를 공유하고 있다. 따라서 이들에 대한 학문적인 접근은 이들의 다양한 가치구현을 위한 차원에서 고문서학, 고서체학 그리고 기록(물)관리학을 통해 이루어지고 있다. 오늘날 이들의 다양한 가치는 역사기록(물)보존소의 열람서비스를 통해 모든 사람들에게 평등하게 제공되고 있다. 그러나 이러한 역사기록물에 대한 접근이 시대와 관심영역의 한계를 초월하여 제도적으로 허용된 데에는 기록물을 내부의 유기적 관계가 형성된 문서들의 전체로 정의하는 아키비스트(Archivist)들의 영향이 지대하였다. 이들은 역사가들을 대신한 기록물관리의 현장에서 문서들의 유기적인 관계에 기초하여 새로운 정리방식(원질서 유지 및 재구성의 원칙)을 고안함으로써 과거에 비해 보다 폭넓고 보다 깊이 있는 과거사 연구를 가능하게 만들었다. 또한 이들은 고문서 및 고서체의 연구자들과 더불어 기록물의 가치를 역사의 한계에서 벗어나 법적, 증거적 그리고 정보적 가치로 대변되는 문화적 차원으로 승격시켰다.
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to search tradition of management and study about archives and to compare this tradition with the reality of korean archival management. In korea, although 'Records and Archives Management Act' was revised last year, it is urgent to ask reflect on ourselves and to take measures because government doesn't care management of archives having historical value as an important policy. Tradition of archives management in Europe is as long as their history. Especially, archives culture heritage accumulated in long period times of the Middle Ages contains value as contents, as a container including contents, and as historical code such as letters and handwritings. As a result, Academic approach to this heritage is achieved by paleography, diplomatics, and archival science for realizing various value. Today, these different value is provided to people impartially through a reference service of Archives. This approach to historical archives was institutionalized above age and sphere of interest thanks to archivists who defined records as entire documents established an organic relation in themselves. They made possible a wider and deeper study in history than before by developing new classification methodology such as 'original order or reorganization rule' based on organic relation in documents. And also, with researcher in diplomatics and paleography, Archivists raised value of records from historical boundary to cultural status containing legal, evidential, and informational value.
