초록

본 연구의 목적은 항공 산업의 환경․사회․지배구조(ESG) 활동을 체계적으로 분석하고, 주요 항공사들이 공통적으로 중요시하는 ESG 활동 요소를 파악하는 것이다. 이를 위해 세계 100대 항공사 중 21개 주요 항공사의 ESG 및 지속가능성 보고서를 대상으로 텍스트 마이닝 기법을 적용하여 분석을 진행하였다. 총 294,308개의 영문 텍스트를 환경(90,903개), 사회(130,949개), 지배구조(72,456개) 영역으로 분류하여 분석하였으며, TF-IDF(Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency) 분석과 LDA(Latent Dirichlet Allocation) 토픽 모델링을 수행하였다. 분석 결과, 환경 영역에서는 ‘에너지 절약’, ‘탄소배출 감축’, ‘탄소배출 정책’이, 사회 영역에서는 ‘인적자원관리’와 ‘고객 안전’이, 지배구조 영역에서는 ‘위기관리 경영’, ‘위기관리 시스템’, ‘지배구조 투명성’, ‘경영효율화’가 주요 주제어로 도출되었다. 이러한 결과는 분석 대상 항공사들의 ESG 활동이 탄소배출 관리 중심의 환경정책, 인적자원 및 안전 중심의 사회적 가치, 위기관리 중심의 지배구조 체계를 중심으로 추진되고 있음을 시사한다. 특히, 사회 영역에서 CSR 활동인 사회공헌 관련 주제어가 주요하게 도출되지 않은 점은 주목할 만하다. 본 연구는 텍스트 마이닝 기법을 ESG 연구에 적용함으로써 방법론적 확장을 시도했다는 점, 항공 산업의 ESG 활동에 대한 명확한 기준 설정의 필요성을 제시했다는 점, 그리고 항공 산업의 ESG 활동이 보다 전략적이고 통합적인 방향으로 발전하고 있음을 규명했다는 점에서 학술적 의의가 있다. 또한, 환경 영역에서의 탄소배출 관리, 사회 영역에서의 인적자원 관리와 안전 관리, 지배구조 영역에서의 위기관리 체계 구축 등 각 영역에서의 구체적인 실무적 시사점을 제공함으로써 항공사들의 ESG 전략 수립 및 실행에 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

Abstract

This study aims to conduct a systematic analysis of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) activities in the aviation industry and elucidate the common ESG elements prioritized by major airlines. Employing text mining techniques, we examined ESG and sustainability reports from 21 major airlines selected from the world’s top 100 carriers. The analytical corpus consisted of 294,308 English texts, systematically categorized into environmental (90,903), social (130,949), and governance (72,456) domains. The methodological framework incorporated Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) analysis and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling to extract latent themes. The LDA analysis revealed distinct thematic clusters within each ESG domain. The environmental sphere yielded ‘energy conservation’, ‘carbon emission reduction’, and ‘carbon emission policies’ as predominant topics. The social domain exhibited ‘human resource management’ and ‘customer safety’ as primary themes, while the governance sector demonstrated ‘risk management’, ‘risk management systems’, ‘governance transparency’ and ‘operational efficiency’ as salient features. These empirical findings suggest that the ESG initiatives of the examined airlines are fundamentally structured around carbon emission management in environmental policies, human capital and safety protocols in social dimensions, and risk management frameworks in governance structures. A significant observation is the conspicuous absence of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) elements, particularly philanthropic activities, within the social domain. This research contributes to the academic literature in several dimensions: it advances methodological frameworks through the implementation of text mining techniques in ESG research, underscores the imperative for establishing standardized ESG evaluation criteria specific to the aviation sector, and documents the strategic evolution and integration of ESG practices in the airline industry. Furthermore, the study provides actionable implications across environmental (carbon emission management), social (human resource and safety management), and governance (risk management system implementation) dimensions, thereby facilitating the development of comprehensive ESG strategies in the aviation sector.
