Abstract
This study analyzed research trends on foreign caregivers in Korea and suggested directions for future studies. To this end, academic articles published since 2003 were retrieved from the Korean Citation Index (KCI) using combinations of the keywords “foreigner,” “overseas Korean,” “international student,” “caregivers”, “elderly care” and “care workforce.” Text data extracted from titles and abstracts were examined through frequency analysis, network analysis, CONCOR analysis (8 clusters), LDA topic modeling (10 topics), and keyword trend analysis. The results show that research on foreign care workers has increased since 2018 and expanded rapidly from 2023. Major themes were categorized into institutional and policy issues, work environment and job satisfaction, sociocultural adaptation, and education, training, and professionalism. Notably, linkages among “work environment,” “job satisfaction,” and “social adaptation” were identified. In terms of temporal trends, regional culture was a central theme before Korea’s transition into an aged society, while workforce management emerged as the core theme thereafter. These findings demonstrate that domestic research has shifted its thematic focus in line with social changes. Furthermore, this study highlights the structural inequalities faced by caregivers and underscores the urgent need for systematic workforce management and policy alternatives.
