Abstract

In the Joseon Dynasty, the standard practice when constructing a royal tomb was to relocate pre-existing graves within the designated royal tomb precinct. However, there are rare exceptions, one of which is the family tomb of the Haeju Jeong clan located within Sareung, the royal tomb of Queen Jeongsun, the consort of King Danjong. In the rapid political changes of the early Joseon Dynasty, Queen Jeongsun from the Song clan, who lost both her husband and her natal family, entrusted her posthumous affairs to the Haeju Jeong clan by adopting Jeong Misu, the son of Princess Gyeonghye, as her heir. Accordingly, her tomb was situated within the ancestral burial ground of the Haeju Jeong family. In 1698 (the 24th year of King Sukjong’s reign), King Danjong and Queen Jeongsun were posthumously honored, leading to the reinstatement of Song’s tomb at Sareung. The royal court granted special privileges: the Jeong clan was allowed to keep their ancestral graves in situ within the royal precinct and to perform ancestral rites from the foot of the mountain, a form of Mangje (over-the-mountain/off-site rites). During the reigns of Kings Yeongjo and Jeongjo, royal visits to Sareung further resulted in grace measures that included appointing Jeong descendants to posts as royal tomb officials (Neunggwan). Meanwhile, because the Haeju Jeong clan’s ancestral graves came to be located within the royal tomb precinct, the clan—unlike ordinary noble families—managed its ancestral burial grounds with the authorization of government offices. Accordingly, documents that the Haeju Jeong clan submitted, depending on the matter, to the Yejo (Ministry of Rites) and other offices have been preserved, and through these, one can observe the clan’s distinctive pattern of managing its ancestral burial grounds.
