Loss of skeletal muscle mass is a primary feature of sarcopeniaand cancer cachexia. In cancer patients, tumor-derived inflammatoryfactors promote muscle atrophy via tumor-to-muscleeffects, which is closely associated with poor prognosis. Duringthe past decade, skeletal muscle has been considered to functionas an autocrine, paracrine, and endocrine organ by releasingnumerous myokines. The circulating myokines can modulatepathophysiology in the other organs, as well as in the tumormicroenvironment, suggesting myokines function as muscleto-tumor signaling molecules. Here, we highlight the roles ofmyokines in tumorigenesis, particularly in terms of crosstalkbetween skeletal muscle and tumor. Better understanding oftumor-to-muscle and muscle-to-tumor effects will shed light onnovel strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
