Abstract
Land-atmosphere interactions are essential for understanding extreme weather events and improving seasonal predictions, while previous studies over the Korean Peninsula have been limited due to a lack of global standard observations. This study utilizes data from the 307-meter Boseong observation tower to analyze the seasonal variability of land-atmosphere interactions. During the summer season, high solar radiation and increased soil moisture enhance the latent heat flux, exhibiting an energy-limited coupling with a negative correlation between the soil moisture and latent heat flux where atmospheric processes, such as the monsoon, predominantly influence the land surface. On the other hand, the other seasons exhibit a water-limited coupling, characterized by dominant sensible heat flux and a strong positive correlation between soil moisture and evaporative fraction. This study provides observed insights into the seasonal characteristics of land-atmosphere interactions in the Korean Peninsula, which contributes to validating and improving numerical models by refining land surface processes in regional climate studies.
