Abstract
In the Yeongdong region of Gangwon, winds of a strong and dry character occur over the Taebaek Mountains. This wind is called Downslope wind and is a mesoscale mountain weather phenomenon that occurs around the world. In this study, we focus on the data from the Gangwon Yeongdong Wind Experiments (G-WEX) to identify the causes of strong wind in the Yeongdong Plain. The results of the precedent research showed that strong winds appeared only in mountainous areas in 2020. However, as a result of continuous observations until 2023, two cases of strong wind appeared in Plain, and a total of three cases including 2019 (Case1: 2019, Case2: 2021, Case3: 2023) were analyzed to show the characteristics of wind. As a result, two inversion layers are observed in the upper atmosphere when strong winds appear the Plain, with the lower inversion layer near 1,000 m, similar to mountainous altitude. In the mountainous observations at the same time, there is only one inversion layer, and the wind speed at the same altitude below 2.0 km is stronger in Yeongdong Plain than in Mountainous. In the plain wind cases, the upper layer maximum wind altitude appears at 1,500 m, lower than in the mountain wind case. In addition, for both mountain and plain station, an upper inversion layer appears between about 3.0 km from the mountain range altitude, which is likely related to the breaking of mountain waves in the upper leeward side and near mountain altitude.
