Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the differences of the conditional and unconditional probabilities of loss/profit and relate the difference to the post-earnings announcement drift. Empirical results indicate that conditional probabilities are higher than unconditional probabilities in both loss and profit samples, although the differences of two probabilities are greater in the loss samples in comparison to the profit samples. Also the differences of the two probabilities are related to the magnitude of post-earnings announcement drift. These results imply that investors' ignorance of conditional probabilities may be attributable to the post-earnings announcement drift for the loss and profit sample.
