Analysis of the Characteristic by Quality Specification and Items for Lubricants in Domestic and Foreign Internal Combustion Engines

Lubricants for internal combustion engines have been played an important role in the operation of internal combustion engines, such as reducing the friction wear of the engine and cooling the heat generated by engine operation. Lubricating oil is basically classified by the American Society of Automotive Engineers(SAE) according to the characteristics of low-temperature viscosity and high-temperature viscosity, and the quality standards of lubricants are prescribed by Korean Industrial Standards (KS) in Korea. In addition, the military has quality standards for two types of gasoline engine oil and six types for diesel engine, and has different quality items from the private sector. In overseas, the American Petroleum Institute (API) sets quality standards for each engine type, depending on the conditions of use or performance of the lubricant. In this study, the current status of domestic and foreign quality standards of lubricants for internal combustion engines was investigated and characteristics of each item in quality standards were analyzed.
