Abstract

This study analyzes the experiences of engaging with RPS (real person slash), a form of secondary creative culture within Korean idol fandoms, focusing on how such engagement expands into the consumption of original BL (boys’ love) content. Closely tied to idol fandom activities, RPS—due to its basis of using real persons’ identities— exhibits a complex consumption pattern in which immersion and non-immersion coexist. This study thus explores, in depth, how RPS users experience consumption stress, and if they expand their interest toward original BL content based on fictional worlds to alleviate such stress. Based on an analysis of data collected through in-depth interviews, our findings indicate that participants experienced RPS-related stress stemming from fandom norms, societal perceptions, and the tension between reality and fantasy, and that they extended their interest to original BL content grounded in fictional worlds as a way to mitigate this stress. This expansion emerged not as a simple substitution of consumption but as a process of broadening the scope of cultural practices available to the users. However, creators of original BL content have also increasingly developed monetization structures under the logic of capitalism, carrying the potential for another form of dependency within participatory culture. In terms of significance, this study identifies how women’s cultural experiences are reshaped within the intertwined contexts of fandom, industry, and capitalism, and raises the issue of securing user subjectivity and autonomy within the subculture industry.
