AUC(area under the curve)

Abstract

The goal of this study is to empirically investigate the impact of introducing non-financial alternative data into the assessment of credit risk. For this end, we establish an improved credit risk assessment model based on the individual borrower’s data, which includes alternative credit score made with non-financial data (i.e., mobile bills payment, purchase behavior, and mobile payment record) on top of the traditional CB (Credit Bureau) score. We apply the AUC (Area Under the Curve) for measuring the degree of improvement in credit risk assessment, separating thin-filer and thick-filer groups. Our test result shows that the inclusion of alternative credit score (based on the non-financial data) improves the forecasting performance as well as the accuracy in credit assessment model with statistical significance. It also shows that the degree of improvement is superior in the thin-filer group than the thick-filers. The result implies that the usage of big data that include non-financial information of customers into credit risk assessment can enhance the financial resource allocation by mitigating information asymmetry between lending institutions and borrowers. The result also reveals the possibility of financial inclusion with thin-filers, especially among college students, house wives, and small business owners, resulting in better social welfare effects.
